A good night's sleep.
Just one good sleep.
And no dark night of the soul.

I wrote about having a dark night of the soul. Later in the day I listened to a webinar on sleep: 4 hacks to having a good night's sleep; and the many negatives to not having a good night's sleep. One of the negatives: a down mood.

I had had a rotten sleep the night before - unusual for me, as are dark nights of the soul.

And I wonder about the 40% of Americans who, according to studies, wake up depressed every morning. Are they just sleep-deprived? Is the depression epidemic actually a sleep-deprivation epidemic?

So about my own dark night of the soul - was it something deep or just a response to lack of sleep?

Anyway, I had a good long sleep last night. And no inner dark night this morning.

By the way, here are the 4 hacks, or tips, on getting a good night's sleep:

1) no coffee after 2 pm, because coffee has a half life of 6-8 hours.

2) no alcohol before bedtime. The rule: allow one hour to pass before bedtime for every glass of wine. So if you drink 2 glasses of wine and go to bed at 10, no alcohol after 8.

3) be consistent in your sleeping patterns.

4) no cell phone or ipad in bed. More generally, no "blue light" for 5 minutes before going to bed.

And with that, may you sleep well and live well.
